Surfaces is one of the hottest names in music right now. With millions of new streams every day, an invitation to play at Bonnaroo, and a recent performance on Late Night with Seth Myers, it’s safe to say that they have announced themselves. The Texas duo, composed of lead singer Forrest Frank and lead producer Colin Padalecki (though they both sing & produce), have built upon the groovy R&B and Lo-Fi that stood out in their debut album and developed a unique brand of upbeat, cathartic, feel-good sound that will turn your frown upside down. They are very fluid and dynamic in terms of genre, but my best way to capture Surfaces in words is *chill electronic beach vibes / indie-pop.*
Surfaces’ third studio LP, Horizons is my favorite album of 2020. The production is absolutely fantastic: a perfect blend of consistent, rhyme, skillful beats and ornate curveballs (from great synth work and effects to saxophone solos and more). The lyrics are soft, relatable, and vague at times—while extremely personal and heartfelt at others. They blend nuance with subtlety so well. Their music makes you feel happier, forget your worries, and enjoy the moment. Surfaces will be one of the most famous bands in the world soon. I’ve loved watching them grow from only a few dozen listeners to 20 million on Spotify so rapidly. My favorite songs on the LP are Take It Easy, Good Day, Sky Interlude, and Keep It Gold. So, don’t let this virus keep you down. Check Horizons out! It’s what we need right now.
Rating: 8/10
P.S. I must concede that I’m biased since I’m friends with Forrest (we went to college together before I transferred). But the numbers don’t lie!

Mate, excellent recommendation. Made pasta yesterday and popped this on after your review and couldn’t agree more, it’s an absolute banger. Perfect weekend music. I’m now going to order the CD because I’m a hundred years old and still like buying CDs.

Thanks man! Love to hear it! Let me know if you want more recommendations from their other LPs. Falling is a banger for sure (first LP). Lots of others too. Cheers to Surfaces!

Numbers do lie. Many people like radio music, but I find most of it is garbage. I listen to the first song and it was okay. Good for background. It was not deep and I was not moved. I will give some other songs a chance. I would rather see a film review you promised. 🙂

Agreed. Sorry about that. I think I’m just super biased because we’re friends but yeah, this music isn’t revolutionary the way the other music I’ve praised is. Will try to stay objective.
As for radio music in general, I totally agree. It’s just shallow crap made for the masses!

I am listening to “Falling” and like it better than the songs you posted. I really like “Alone”. Wow, so emotional.

Yep, Falling is my fav by them! But since I was reviewing the new album I sadly couldn’t include it, ya know? And yeah Alone is great too! Their early stuff is more R&B & Lo-Fi like I was saying in the post, and—while some may prefer their new sound—I prefer that old sound. So glad you found some good ones!

And fun fact: I’m posting a review of a TV show today, so pretty similar to a film review!

I just downgraded my rating a bit because you were right: I can’t let friendship adulterate the score!

You are awesome for some many reasons. You make me smile. I only listened to two songs. It is not enough to give a real opinion. I will listen to more, but I understand the feeling of being biased. I try hard to remain unbiased when watching a film or listening to music. If we are honest with ourselves, we are all a bit bias whether we like it or not. I cannot wait to read your review of a series.

Hope you enjoyed my review of The Americans, speaking of my first series review! Thanks for these comments!

And also, numbers do lie indeed! I think a great example is Kendrick Lamar. He has made some absolutely phenomenal and groundbreaking stuff, yet most of his famous songs are among his worst (just superficial radio hits). Humble just might be the worst song he’s ever made, yet it has over a billion plays and is his most popular song. I don’t know why anybody would ever want to listen to that garbage.

Now, I will have to check out some of Lamar’s other music. I judged him on a radio song. I should know better, but I too can be bias.

Totally get it. His popular songs are mostly terrible. The ones I’d recommend are 1. Sing About Me I’m Dying of Thirst (best rap song I’ve ever heard) 2. How Much a Dollar Cost 3. Keisha’s Song 4. Kush & Corinthians 5. The Art of Peer Pressure. Those are all substantive, provocative, and well-done—even if some of them are barely known!

I agree with Luke’s list. Much better than his radio pop trash

I thank you for reading my music reviews. I know they are not comparable to your reviews. Mine is about something different at this time. I needed to do this and i needed a journey. I want to write how I feel because I am not sure about feelings.

Dang those are great ones too, Kels! For what it’s worth, I originally had Remedy in my fav songs list—but cut it because I didn’t want to overload it with too many songs, ya know? Stay healthy and virus-free!

^My fav song on each of their first 2 albums, if you were curious. Falling is smooth, dazzling, Lo-Fi, and ethereal. Meanwhile, Outside Interlude, an instrumental song with no lyrics, features an absolutely phenomenal beat—coupled with some cerebral production. Enjoy!

As 4 the music, it was solid. Nothing too unique/deep. But dec cohesive n something u can play in any setting. I love Sky Interlude too. It seems like their interludes are often some of their best songs (idrc if others get more plays). Didn’t like some of the poppy songs – – – but the album is at least 3.5-4 stars out of 5 imo. Thnx for sharing. Will keep listenin’ dude!
