HBO’s new headliner Lovecraft Country is packed with artistry, absurdity, and a twisted sense of reality. The cinematography is breathtaking, and the set design is excellent. The story crafts a dense world of its own—you can’t deny that it is well-done. Essentially, the show plays like an ambitious, meandering Jordan Peele film. The sci-fi elements are ludicrous, but they are also very gratifying. The CGI is excellent too. Moreover, as this is a period piece set in the 1950s, the show’s impassioned depiction of racism is an apt reminder of the injustices that continue to afflict people of color. Speaking of people, I must compliment the acting. Every snob knows that Michael Kenneth Williams—who shined in a show I recently reviewed, The Night Of—is brilliant. The lead role of Jonathan Majors is good as well. This show is not one of HBO’s best, but it is one to look out for if you like high-caliber fantasy. Granted, it doesn’t hold a candle to the likes of, say, Game of Thrones. It is far too dramatic and really weird. But that’s fine. It doesn’t try to be anything other than itself. Ultimately, Lovecraft Country is a refreshing new series.
Rating: 8/10
I am not sure that I can watch this one. I ate horror films. I don’t like being afraid. I grew up that way.

Aw dang. Well def doesn’t seem like your cup of tea, but fortunately there have been lots of great shows lately!

Is it really scary or like the Shining scary? Do you have some other series recommendations?

It’s honestly not that scary. It has elements of horror at times, but I’m thinking specifically of the end of episode 1 and parts of episode 8—so that’s not a lot of scary scenes in the grand scheme of things.

^So if your main concern is the scary aspects, I think you’d be fine. But then again, even though the horror aspects shouldn’t bother you, it’s still not a show for everyone. It’s very ludicrous and fantasy-oriented. Also just plain weird in general. I really really liked it personally, but I get why others might call it poor or a waste of time and so forth. For example, it got really good reviews from critics, but its user ratings on IMdb, Metacritic, & Rotten Tomatoes were very low. Guess you’ll have to see for yourself if you’re into it. 🤠

Finally, as for other recommendations, I suppose it depends. What are your fav shows? What I’d recommend would be based on what you’ve liked so far. What I will say is that my favorite shows of all time are 1. The Americans (which is on Prime Video) and 2. The Night Of (which is on HBO). After that, I’d also recommend The People vs OJ Simpson, True Detective season 1, and Homeland seasons 1 and 2. Of course, shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad are internationally acclaimed for valid reasons; they’re very good, but they’re also a big commitment—and I don’t find them as compelling as The Americans or The Night Of. So essentially I guess my point is that they’re overrated.

I like your recommendations and I will explore them. I have watched all of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. Both series were great, but perhaps overrated as you stated. I doubt I would rewatch either of them. Thank you for you all your responses.

As for recent shows, I’m sure you’ve heard about The Queen’s Gambit, and I’d say that it’s pretty solid. I’d give it an 8.5 out of 10, which is ofc higher than my Lovecraft rating, but I liked Lovecraft more. Other recent shows: Unorthodox, Caliphate, and Bodyguard.
Anyway, sorry for all of the comments, but I wanted to at least put these thoughts out somewhere on my blog since I haven’t covered enough shows on it anyway. But I stick with my original picks—I think The Americans is the best show I’ve ever seen (the first couple of seasons are 8/10’s but seasons 3-6 are all 10/10’s and they just get better and better all the way to the final episode). And The Night Of remains my favorite mini-series. It’s only 8 episodes, so you can watch it all in 2-3 days (plus the first episode is def the best first episode of a show ever). The links are below:

^And True Detective season 1 is another incredible sequence of 8 episodes, just like The Night Of. You just have to get through the first few episodes (which are slower), but by episode 4 you’ll be blown away!

I changed my mind several times but have ultimately decided that I’d upgrade my review of Lovecraft Country from a 7.5 to an 8.

Looks like there won’t be a season 2, so it’ll be a standalone one-season series. Won’t take too much time to watch it all!
