I am very excited to announce that I will be reviewing ALL types of music from now on. So you’ll start to see some reviews of mixtapes, EPs, and even songs that seem worthy of consideration. What better song to start with than the greatest one I’ve ever heard? Frank Ocean’s sprawling 10-minute track “Pyramids” (on his iconic R&B album, Channel Orange) comes to mind. Obviously these types of discussions are highly subjective and futile in many ways, and I don’t expect many people to agree with me. Bands like Pink Floyd and Radiohead alone have produced countless songs that you might pick over “Pyramids.” But I will make my case nonetheless.
Featuring all sorts of imagery, parallels, plot twists, various literary and historical references, and some of the best production I’ve ever heard, “Pyramids” is split into two parts. It begins with the story of two Pharaohs of Egypt—Cleopatra and her partner, which is implied to be Ptolemy XIV—only to end up with a modern-day prostitute and stripper named Cleopatra (who works at “The Pyramid” in Las Vegas) and her lover, a pimp. In doing so the song laments the evolution of the African people, from rulers and icons to being enslaved and degraded.
The first three minutes contain pop and funk elements as Frank focuses on Cleopatra. He initially sings of her beauty and her exploits, but then he sings of her downfall from Ptolemy’s death to Cleopatra leaving Egypt to be with her new lover, the Roman general Mark Antony, to her suicide. “Our war is over, our queen has met her doom,” he sings in an allusion to the Battle of Alexandria.
But just before the 4-minute mark, “Pyramids” begins to transform. Over the next 60 seconds, “Pyramids” morphs into a trippy segue. Then comes part 2, which is significantly better than part 1 despite its many strengths. Frank introduces the new Cleopatra—whose life as a stripper and prostitute is, indeed, symbolic of the historical plight of the African woman—from the perspective of her pimp and lover (who is the narrator in part 2). Then the beat drops. And it does so magnificently, as Frank echoes the hook. In the next verse, Frank alternates between rapping and singing with impressive flow. He describes the modern couple with beautiful little vignettes of their life, whose fate mirrors that of their predecessors.
The smooth synthesizer work is met with a neat arrangement of trumpets as Frank’s verse continues. And in the final lines of the verse, Frank unleashes a stunning twist, singing “But your love ain’t free no more.” Granted, there are lots of interpretations to this twist (and other parts of this ambitious song). I think it reveals that the pimp eventually has to pay her for sex, signifying that he has sunk to the level of paying his former lover for her love. But he could also just be saying that he has to pay the price of giving her up to other men to earn money for both of them. Either way, this verse completes the thematic circle: Once powerful people have been reduced through time to (in this case) sad pimps and sullied prostitutes. Then comes the outro, where John Mayer erupts into a 2-minute guitar solo.
Needless to say, “Pyramids” is a masterpiece. Its combination of such lyrical and sonic perfection is what compels me to say that it’s the best song I’ve ever heard. And though it carries a sad disposition, it ultimately feels empowering. Before any of you comment that I’m simply “overthinking” it, I’ll add that Frank Ocean is a genius. Every song of his has immense depth. He is a polymath: an extremely intelligent human with compelling gifts as a singer, writer, songwriter, producer, composer, photographer, interior designer, etc. Also, he’s not one of the most acclaimed musicians ever because he happens to be an LGBTQ black man. I will fight anyone who disagrees. Frank isn’t a product of “trends.” It’s the opposite. He creates trends. So check this song out! Just remember to have nice headphones, a clear head, and patience for these 10 minutes of musical heaven.

franks god, i love how he collabs with my fav jonny from radiohead sometimes
For sure. I know Jonny worked on Endless with Frank, but has he on other Frank projects? Very curious to know!
Oh and also that Jonny arranged the strings for the song Seigfried on Blonde (one of my favorites on Blonde). As for Endless, I know he also did the strings for Frank’s cover of “At Your Best” (likewise, it’s def one of my favorites on Endless). But not sure what specifically Jonny has done otherwise.

seigfried is a classic
Yesss, as for Seigfried!

won’t let me play this one
Oh dang just saw that the video was removed from Youtube. They’ve really been cracking down on links to songs from Endless since Frank released it as his final album under his Def Jam Records contract. (But then, of course, he released Blonde the very next day and released it independently while allowing people to use its content in Youtube videos!)
Do you use Spotify or Apple Music?
idk. i’ll look it up n get back to u
Awesome!
☺️😊
😉
Definitely I’m gonna check out nights and I’ll be back asap…
Awesome! Also, hate to shower you with too much content but Ivy is another masterpiece by Frank. It’s more stripped down and minimalistic but is such a beautiful and heartfelt love song that really strikes me deep down each time. Link below:

Ohh that’s great… I’m waiting…😁😁😁😁
Love Nights also because it’s based on Frank’s actual life. He had just moved into his dorm at the University of New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. It destroyed his dorm, his home, and his life in many ways. He soon became homeless and was sleeping on other people’s couches in between visits to the studio (on his way to ultimately becoming one of the top songwriters & a legendary artist with his own vast collection of iconic music). Nights is the story of that struggle.
Anyway, sorry for the long replies!
Don’t be sorry… I love engaging with people…… And when it’s about someone you admire then conversation is meant to lengthy.. of course.. just like I admire khalil gibran..
Love that. And so so true!!! Excited to see what you think about Nights!
